Description

Abstract:

This spatial dataset displays the surveyed mapped polygons for remnant vegetation within the Darwin to Palmerston Region and the Litchfield Shire and describes the dominant vegetation communities and floristic groups.
The report was created for the Darwin and Palmerston Municipalities vegetation surveys in 1995 in association with Greening Australia.

The Litchfield Shire (boundaries circa 1998) was completed in 1998 in association with Greening Australia and includes 8 additional vegetation communities not described in the original report. These additional units, Communities 47 - 54, are described in the spatial datasets. The report created for the Darwin and Palmerston Municipalities should also be consulted.

These spatial datasets represent the vegetation on the ground at the time of the surveys. The named surveyed areas are not defined by current Municipal boundaries.

DARWIN TO PALMERSTON REGIONS REMNANT VEGETATION
(Dept Survey Code: DARPM_10) Data should not be used beyond scale 1:10,000.
Mapped primarily by John Brock 1994-5;
The mapping also incorporates data from other surveys:
Casuarina Coastal Reserve and Rapid Creek Catchment Veg Surveys (Brocklehurst P 1994) ; and also Mangrove Communities Darwin Harbour. (Brocklehurst P, Edmeades B 1996)

LITCHFIELD SHIRE REMNANT VEGETATION
(Dept Survey Code: LSHIR_100) Data should not be used beyond scale 1:100,000.
The Litchfield Shire was mapped at two scales.
Northern areas were mapped by Steve Denney and John Brock, 1996-97 at the 1:100,000 scale.
Southern areas were mapped by Diane Napier, 1998 at the 1:25,000 scale.

Data Quality

Lineage:Original map unit boundaries delineated from aerial photographs and stereoscope interpretation. Map units transferred to topographic map sheets via a mapograph. Original maps were hardcopy only. With the advent of geographic information systems polygons were digitised by rectifying the original hard copy maps.
Map unit boundaries derived using aerial photography and digital satellite imagery, geological and topographic data. Field data (site information) described and classified according to national standards at the time of capture.
Map unit polygons collected via geographic information system (ArcGIS and/or MapInfo).
Land and Vegetation resource mapping should only be considered a guide to the spatial and temporal occurrence of land resources at the scale at which it is prepared. Mapping published by this department includes the recommendation that a site inspection should always accompany mapping for specific areas and that field verification is required to define the location and extent of land resource boundaries across the area in question. This is particularly relevant given the potential for land cover changes to have occurred within the study area since the date of this survey (1994-1998).

Positional Accuracy:POLYGON DATA: Map unit boundaries transferred from aerial photographs to topographic maps, using the best available topographic mapping at the time via a mapograph. Level of accuracy depends on the number of control points on individual aerial photographs. Control points include creek lines, cadastre and other topographic features. Depending on the nature of the landscape (the number of control points), positional accuracy may vary. Positional accuracy generally considered moderate to high.

POINT DATA: Site point coordinates collected from a geographic positioning system with general accuracy of within 100m. Selective availability during this time prevented increased accuracy. After 1997, site point coordinates improved to accuracy within 10-50m.

Attribute Accuracy:Attributes assigned according to the dominant feature. Attribute values, as described in the Data Dictionary below, have been added to each polygon.

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

Completeness:Complete
