Title:Land Resources of the Elizabeth, Darwin and Blackmore Rivers - Greater Darwin Area, Northern Territory.
Custodian:Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security
This dataset provides polygon information on the map units boundaries of the Elizabeth, Darwin and Blackmore Catchments - Greater Darwin Area, Northern Territory. The main purpose of the survey is an inventory and an evaluation of the land resources of the for planning rural and urban use.
This dataset is a compilation of 8 existing land resource surveys. (refer to Supplementary Information to see original survey listing)
The original Land Unit survey report was published by Fogarty et al. (1979) The Land Resources of the Darwin Area. Land Unit descriptions are sourced from the original report and adjacent surveys and are now covered by Fogarty et al. (1984) The Land Resources of the Elizabeth, Darwin and Blackmore Rivers.

Lineage:Original map unit boundaries delineated from aerial photographs and stereoscope interpretation. Map units transferred to clean dyeline sheets or topographic maps via a mapograph. Original maps were hardcopy only. With the advent of geographic information systems polygons were digitised by rectifying the original hard copy maps.
Map unit boundaries derived using hard copy aerial photography and stereoscope, satellite imagery (post 1993), geological and topographic maps. Field data (site data) described and classified according to national standards at the time of capture.
Map unit polygons collected via geographic information system (ArcGIS/MapInfo). Core landform, soil and vegetation attributes attached to map units with additional attributes unique to individual surveys.
Positional Accuracy:POLYGON DATA
Map unit boundaries digitised on screen directly from digital rectified aerial photographs. Level of accuracy depends on the number of control points on individual aerial photographs. Control points include creek lines, cadastre and other topographic features. Depending on the nature of the landscape (the number of control points), positional accuracy may vary. Positional accuracy generally considered high to very high.
POINT SOURCE DATA
Survey teams navigated during field operations with topographic maps, aerial photographs and prismatic compass's. Point source locations marked on aerial photography in the field. Positional accuracy considered within 300m but generally below 200m depending on the terrain. Site coordinates derived by transferring site locations from aerial photographs to topographic maps and coordinates calculated. In some cases sites have been georeferenced directly from aerial photography to Google Earth Web Map Server in MapInfo or ArcGIS.
Attribute Accuracy:Attributes assigned according to the dominant feature. For example where ten sites have been grouped to describe a particular map unit and two different soils described from these sites then the dominant soil is chosen. Core attribute values, as described in the Data Dictionary below, have been added to each polygon.
Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

Attribute Attribute Description Possible Code Code Description ACID_SOIL Alias: Acid Sulfate Risk
Land units have been grouped into classes to describe the risk of Acid Sulfate Soil conditions; either High (Class 3), Moderate (Class 2) or Nil. (Class 1)
DOUBLE_LAB Alias: Land Unit Other Component
Used where a land unit label shares 2 descriptions. (field only used when relevant)
DR_CLASS Alias: Drainage Class
Soil drainage classes summarise local soil wetness and describes conditions expected in most years.
Class 1 Rapidly, well and moderately well drained soils. (Nil to Low Level of Seasonal Soil Waterlogging) Class 2 Imperfectly drained soils. (Moderate to High Level of Seasonal Soil Waterlogging) Class 3 Poorly and very poorly drained soils. (Severe Level of Seasonal Soil Waterlogging or Inundation for Extended Periods.) LAND_UNIT Alias: Land Unit
The LAND_UNIT field is the land unit label from the spatial dataset (ie.9a2).
LF_CLASS Alias: Landform Class
Landform class is a system adopted by the department. The categories do not conform to national criteria even though some have been sourced from Australian Soil and Land Survey - Field Handbook (Mc Donald et.al. 1998).
LF_DESC Alias: Landform Description
Landform description includes details about landform, and general notes pertaining to slope, surface gravel and other details describing the land unit.
SOIL Alias: Dominant Soil Order
The dominant soil order described in a land unit is recorded.
SOIL_DESC Alias: Soil Description
Soil description includes an ASC or Northcote/other soil classification and usually includes colour, soil depth and other notes describing the soil.
SOIL_SYS Alias: Soil Classification System
The soil classification system used to describe the soil in the land unit description.
SPECIES_ 3 Alias: Veg Dom Species 3
Where 3 dominant vegetation species described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.
SPECIES_1 Alias: Veg Dom Species 1
The dominant vegetation species described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.
SPECIES_2 Alias: Veg Dom Species 2
Where 2 dominant vegetation species were described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.
SURVEY_ID Alias: Survey Identifier
A department code that usually refers to the first five characters from the original survey site sheet.
SURVEY_NME Alias: Survey Name
The full name of the report to which the mapping refers
VEG_DESC Alias: Vegetation Description
The dominant species and its structure are recorded. Occasionally it will include `minor' vegetation communities also noted in the land unit description and/or notes specific to the community.
VEG_STRUC Alias: Dominant Veg Structure
Structural classes from NVIS (ESCAVI 2003), Walker and Hopkins (1998) and Specht (1970) classification schemes.
VEG_SYS Alias: Veg Classification System
The National Vegetation Information System (NVIS) classification system.
