Description

Abstract:

A high resolution survey (1:100,000 scale dataset) mapping/describing landform, soils and vegetation. Mapped information describes land units and their attributes as distinct from reconnaissance level/land systems surveys. Information is generally interpreted to indicate land capability for a range of land uses and provides a basis for identifying the extent and distribution of land resources for Indiana Station. (Land Unit - A reasonably homogeneous part of the land surface, distinct from surrounding terrain with constant properties in landform, soils and vegetation)
Survey area is located approximately 200km east-north-east of Alice Springs off the Plenty Highway.
Core attributes describing the land units, as defined by this department, were added to the spatial dataset in October 2014.

Data Quality

Lineage:Original linework derived stereographically using aerial photography to delineate land unit boundaries and site selection, then extensively ground-truthed with topographic basemap coordinated field survey and site data collection. Verified linework transferred to 1:100,000 film/base, with resultant linework scanned, edited and attributed by CSIRO into GIS system as ArcInfo vector information then built as a polygon coverage.
The spatial accuracy of resultant coverage was up to 600m out in places, so the cover was rubbersheeted to obvious points on a rectified Landsat 7TM satellite image (101/76, 7/6/2000, purchased as Level 9 rectified from Geoimage) in November 2000, and checked against the AUSLIG Raster 100K topo data.
Source data
Aerial photography - 1:35,000 B&W 00/00/1980
- 1:80,000 B&W 00/00/1971 Illogwa Creek, R
- 1:80,000 Colour 00/00/1984 Ambalundum, R
Satellite imagery - Landsat 7TM 101/76, 7/6/2000, as Level 9 rectified from Geoimage
Base map - Lands/Survey Branch NT 1:100,000 film/base from 1:250,000 ATSS AGD66
- Australian Topographic Survey Series 1:250,000 AGD66
- Australian Topographic Survey Series 1:100,000 AGD66
- Northern Territory Cadastre AGD66
GIS - ArcInfo vector AGD66

Positional Accuracy:Good - Derived from topographic basemap, NT cadastre and GPS. The summation of errors from all sources results in data with a standard deviation defined by scale used as +/-250m for well-defined points.

Attribute Accuracy:High - The accuracy of the attribute information is considered high and conforms to the 'Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook' at time of capture.

Logical Consistency:Good - Dataset topological consistency has been system checked and all classified polygons are closed, nodes are formed at the intersection of lines and there is only one label within each polygon. Polygons have been classified for Land Unit ID in the lookup table.

Completeness:Judged complete at this stage - spatial and attribute verification of the dataset has been performed. Digital cover is available for export and final product map has been produced.

Data Dictionary

AttributeAttribute DescriptionPossible CodeCode Description
DOUBLE_LABAlias: Land Unit Other Component; used where a land unit label share 2 descriptions.
LAND_UNITAlias: Land Unit
The LAND_UNIT field is the land unit label from the spatial dataset (ie 9a2).
LF_CLASSAlias: Landform Class
Landform class is a system adopted by the department. The categories do not conform to national criteria even though some have been sourced from Australian Soil and Land Survey - Field Handbook (Mc Donald et.al. 1998).
LF_DESCAlias: Landform Description
Landform description includes details about landform, and general notes pertaining to slope, surface gravel and other details describing the land unit.
SOILAlias: Dominant Soil Order
The dominant soil order described in a land unit is recorded.
SOIL_DESCAlias: Soil Description
Soil description includes an ASC or Northcote/other soil classification and usually includes colour, soil depth and other notes describing the soil.
SOIL_SYSAlias: Soil Classification System
The soil classification system used to describe the soil in the land unit description
SPECIES_1Alias: Veg Species 1
The dominant vegetation species described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.
SPECIES_2Alias: Veg Species 2
Where 2 dominant vegetation species were described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.
SPECIES_3Alias: Veg Species 3
Where 3 dominant vegetation species described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance
SURVEY_IDSURVEY_ID Alias: Survey Identifier
Usually refers to the first five characters from the corporate survey code.
SURVEY_NMEAlias: Survey Name
The full name of the report to which the mapping refers
VEG_DESCAlias: Vegetation Description
The VEG_DESC is the vegetation related text field from the map legend. The amount of detail may vary between surveys.
VEG_STRUCAlias: Dominant Veg Structure
Vegetation structural classes from NVIS (ESCAVI 2003), Walker and Hopkins (1998) and Specht (1970) classification schemes
VEG_SYSAlias: Veg Classification System
The National Vegetation Information System (NVIS) classification system.
