Description

Abstract:

This land resources survey describes the polygon information on the map unit boundaries of the pastoral property Pine Hill Station, Northern Territory. The survey was conducted in 1999 at a scale of 1:100000, covers an area of approximately 2,870km2 and is located approximately 150km north of Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway.
The purpose of this survey was was to map, describe and evaluate land resources to assist with land management considerations for the property.

The spatial dataset was updated in February, 2011 when additional descriptive attributes were attached to the land unit polygons. The attribute fields are described in the Metadata Data Dictionary below.

Data Quality

Lineage:Original linework derived stereographically using aerial photography to delineate land unit boundaries and site selection, then extensively ground-truthed with topographic basemap/GPS coordinated field survey and site data collection. Verified linework transferred to 1:25,000 or 1:50,000 film print of rectified Landsat TM, resultant linework scanned into GIS system as ArcInfo vector information then built as a polygon coverage by GEOIMAGE, February 1999.

Map unit polygons collected via geographic information system (ArcGIS/MapInfo). Core landform, soil and vegetation attributes attached to map units with additional attributes unique to individual surveys.
The spatial dataset was updated in February 2011 when additional descriptive attributes were attached to the land unit polygons. The attribute fields are described in the Metadata Data Dictionary below.

Positional Accuracy:POLYGON DATA
Map unit boundaries digitised on screen directly from digital rectified aerial photographs. Level of accuracy depends on the number of control points on individual aerial photographs. Control points include creek lines, cadastre and other topographic features. Depending on the nature of the landscape (the number of control points), positional accuracy may vary. Positional accuracy generally considered high to very high.
POINT DATA
Site point coordinates derived from a geographic positioning system with general accuracy of within 10-50m.

Attribute Accuracy:Attributes assigned according to the dominant feature. For example, where ten sites have been grouped to describe a particular map unit and two different soils described from these sites then the dominant soil is chosen. Attribute values, as described in the Data Dictionary below, have been added to each polygon.

Logical Consistency:Dataset topological consistency has been system checked and all classified polygons are closed, nodes are formed at the intersection of lines and there is only one label within each polygon. GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

Data Dictionary

AttributeAttribute DescriptionPossible CodeCode Description
DOUBLE_LABAlias: Land Unit Other Component
This applies ONLY to surveys with land units that have double labels, for example 5a/5c. This field is used to acknowledge that this land unit contains another component (in this case 5c).
LAND_UNITAlias: Land Unit
the land unit label from the spatial dataset (eg 9a2)
LF_CLASSAlias: Landform Classification
the landform classification has been adopted by the dept across a number of surveys since 2000 to group land units into broad landform entities
LF_DESCAlias: Landform Description
includes details about landform, and usually general notes pertaining to slope, surface gravel and other details describing the land unit.
SOILAlias: Dominant Soil Type
The dominant soil order described in a land unit is recorded.
SOIL_DESCAlias: Soil Description
includes an ASC or Northcote/other soil classification and usually includes colour, soil depth and other notes describing the soil.
SOIL_SYSAlias: Soil Classification System
used to describe the soil in the land unit description. It is recommended that where possible soils are translated to an order in the Australian Soil Classification (Isbell 2003).
SPECIES_1Alias: Veg Species 1
The dominant vegetation species described in a land unit are recorded under SPECIES_1, SPECIES_2 and SPECIES_3 respectively using non abbreviated Latin names. The order of species listed determines their dominance.
SPECIES_2Alias: Veg Species 2
where 2 dominant vegetations species are recorded in a land unit
SPECIES_3Alias: Veg Species 3
where 3 dominant vegetations species are recorded in a land unit
SURVEY_IDAlias: Survey Identification
the first five characters from the corporate survey code
SURVEY_NMEAlias: Survey Name
the full name of the report to which the mapping refers (or the original survey report if several surveys have been amalgamated)
VEG_DESCAlias: Vegetation Description
Vegetation community is described; dominant species and its structure are recorded.
VEG_STRUCAlias: Vegetation Structure
The dominant vegetation structure in a Land unit is recorded. It is determined according to the Vegetation Classification scheme used to derive the data.
VEG_SYSAlias: Veg Classification System
vegetation classification system used to determine and describe the vegetation structure in a Land unit description.
