Description

Abstract:

This polygon spatial dataset provides information on the land unit boundaries of Woodgreen Station, Northern Territory and describes dominant landform, soils and vegetation. The survey area of 2,215 km2 is located approximately 140 km north of Alice Springs on the Sandover Highway. The name, Atartinga Station, was also used as a local reference for the property.

The polygons were created using satellite imagery classification with limited field survey work undertaken in 1988. The spatial data should not be used beyond a mapping scale of 1:100,000.
Core attributes describing the land units, as defined by this department, were added to the spatial dataset in November 2015. (refer to Data Dictionary)

Data Quality

Lineage:Original linework derived using satellite image classification to delineate land unit boundaries and site selection. The original image was stratified into broad land types based on initial image interpretation, local knowledge and ground truthing. Supervised classification within each of these strata was conducted using training classes which aimed to capture the diversity of spectral responses for that strata. The resulting classified image with labelled units representing the ground truthed vegetation types was plotted from ERMapper with a legend containing landscape photographs of each class. ArcInfo GRID was used to simplify the classified raster data, (which had many small areas of only a few pixels in size) resultant grid dataset converted into a ArcInfo vector polygon coverage AGD66, then further processed to reduce the number of polygons and produce the final coverage.
The spatial data was projected to geographics, datum GDA94 in 2005.
Source data: Satellite image - LandSat5 TM 18/12/1996 / Path / Row 7 / Q Scene / Bands 1 to 5

Positional Accuracy:Derived from LandSat5 TM imagery, GPS and NT cadastre. The summation of errors from all sources results in data with a standard deviation defined by scale used as +/-250m for well-defined points.

Attribute Accuracy:Although limited fieldwork was conducted in 1988, the extensive local knowledge of the landholder (Bob Purvis) was incorporated in the mapping process resulting in a attribute information rating that is considered high and conforms to the 'Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook' at time of capture.
Attribute values, as described in the Data Dictionary below, have been added to each polygon.

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

Completeness:Complete

Data Dictionary

AttributeAttribute DescriptionPossible CodeCode Description
LAND_UNITAlias: Land Unit
The LAND_UNIT field is the land unit label from the spatial dataset (ie 9a2).
LFORM_CLASSAlias: Landform Class
Landform class is a system adopted by the department. The categories do not conform to national criteria even though some have been sourced from Australian Soil and Land Survey - Field Handbook (Mc Donald et.al. 1998).
LF_DESCAlias: Landform Description
Landform description includes details about landform, and general notes pertaining to slope, surface gravel and other details describing the land unit.
SOILAlias: Dominant Soil Order
The dominant soil order described in a land unit is recorded.
SOIL_DESCAlias: Soil Description
Soil description includes an ASC or Northcote/other soil classification and usually includes colour, soil depth and other notes describing the soil.
SOIL_SYSAlias: Soil Classification System
The soil classification system used to describe the soil in the land unit description
SPECIES_1Alias: Veg Dom Species 1
The dominant vegetation species described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.
SPECIES_2Alias: Veg Dom Species 2
Where 2 dominant vegetation species were described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.
SPECIES_3Alias: Veg Dom Species 3
Where 3 dominant vegetation species described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance
SURVEY_IDAlias: Survey Identifier
A department code that usually refers to the first five characters from the original survey site sheet.
SURVEY_NMEAlias: Survey Name
The name of the survey area or report to which the mapping refers
VEG_DESCAlias: Vegetation Description
The dominant species and its structure are recorded. Occasionally it will include `minor' vegetation communities also noted in the land unit description and/or notes specific to the community.
VEG_STRUCAlias: Dominant Veg Structure
Vegetation structural classes from NVIS (ESCAVI 2003), Walker and Hopkins (1998) and Specht (1970) classification schemes
VEG_SYSAlias: Veg Classification System
The National Vegetation Information System (NVIS) classification system.
