Description
Is a reconnaissance level survey (1:250,000 scale dataset) covering the Darwin Region broadly describing landform, soils and vegetation. Mapped information describes associated patterns/land systems as distinct from higher resolution mapping. Information is usually interpreted to indicate land capability for a range of land uses and provides a basis for identifying the extent and distribution of land resources for the Darwin Region. (Land System - An area or group of areas throughout which there is a re-recurring pattern of landform, soils and vegetation. Recognised as being an assemblage of Land Units).
This spatial dataset was amalgamated within the compilation dataset Land System Surveys of the Northern Part of the Northern Territory. (Department survey code NORTH_250)

Data Quality
Lineage:Original linework derived stereographically using aerial photography
to delineate land unit boundaries and site selection, then extensively ground-truthed with topographic basemap coordinated field survey and site data collection. Verified linework transferred photogrammatically to 1:100,000 film/base to produce final map. Resultant linework scanned/digitised into GIS system as ArcInfo vector information then built as a polygon coverage. Recompiled and updated to GDA94 as part of ongoing GIS Progarm 2004.

Positional Accuracy:Derived from topographic basemap, NT cadastre and GPS. The summation of errors from all sources results in data with a standard deviation defined by scale used as +/-250m for well-defined points.
Attribute Accuracy:The accuracy of the attribute information is considered high and conforms to the 'Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook' at time of capture.
Logical Consistency:Dataset topological consistency has been checked and all polygons are closed, nodes are formed at the intersection of lines and there is only one label point within each polygon.
Completeness:Land System attributes have been added to this dataset according to departmental conventions.
