Abstract:

Northern Territory Geological Survey (NTGS) Geochemistry datasets contain information on available open file geochemical data from companies and/or the NTGS collected on stream sediments. The data is captured by the department via compulsory reporting from exploration companies or analyses done by NTGS geologists.

Data Quality

Lineage:Sample and assay data are captured from both open file company exploration reports and NTGS projects. Exploration data is extracted from legacy hardcopy reports by scanning and digitising, including spatial data capture from maps where necessary. Legacy data capture has been completed at various times and usually on a geological terrain basis. More recent exploration reports and data are supplied in digital formats and have been uploaded directly into a database after transcription to a standard loading template. NTGS data is primarily for rock samples undergoing whole rock geochemical analysis. NTGS undertake QA/QC on NTGS collected samples involving assessing precision and accuracy of techniques through internationally recognised standard reference materials and NTGS in house standards, including the identification of duplicates and blanks. Data is transferred into a SQL Server database. Data is validated twice, at the template stage (before entry) and during loading into the database. Data is extracted using ETL tools and loaded into STRIKE as well as file based outputs including MapInfo table and ESRI shapefile formats, available from the NT Wide Downloads page.

Positional Accuracy:Approximately 20-150m metres using 100K topographical maps or 1-10m using GPS. Decimal latitudes and longitudes are available for each site.

Attribute Accuracy:Analysis is performed by laboratories to set standards. Geological observations and descriptive attributes noted by Geological Survey geologists.

Logical Consistency:Data is logically consistent for the purposes of geological interpretation.

Completeness:Data is as complete as possible for each record. Data cannot be entered without all the mandatory fields being completed. Data is not entered into a database without location data. All sample types are available in the Northern Territory Geochemistry Datasets, Digital Information Package 001 (DIP001). Drill samples are not available on STRIKE (NTGS web mapping data delivery and viewing application http://strike.nt.gov.au). Due to the flat file nature of the STRIKE layers the laboratory method information is not included for each assay and the original source will need be checked. Laboratory method information is included in DIP001. Reports can be searched and downloaded via GEMIS (geoscience.nt.gov.au/gemis).
