Description

Abstract:

Groundwater Extraction Points
This spatial dataset contains point features associated with a groundwater extraction licence granted by the Controller of Water Resources.
The spatial dataset describes registered bore details, the groundwater extraction licence number and the groundwater resource details which the bore connects to and may draw water from. The data also includes a web link to the Licence Decision documents.

Surface Water Extraction Points
This spatial dataset contains point features associated with a surface water extraction licence granted by the Controller of Water Resources. The location of the extraction point is sourced from a data entry in the Water Act Licensing and Permit System (WALAPS).
The spatial dataset describes the surface water extraction licence number and includes a web link to the Licence Decision documents.

Data Quality

Lineage:Groundwater Extraction Points: Data is extracted from the Water Act Licensing and Permit System (WALAPS) containing details of all bores associated with a groundwater extraction licence. The table is joined to the NT Bores spatial dataset sourced from the departments HYDSTRA database. The spatial dataset is updated on a daily basis.
For more information about NT Bores refer to Metadata record: www.ntlis.nt.gov.au/metadata/export_data?type=html&metadata_id=2DBCB7711FC106B6E040CD9B0F274EFE

Surface Water Extraction Points: Data is extracted from the Water Act Licensing and Permit System (WALAPS) containing details where a surface water licence has been granted. The spatial dataset is updated on a daily basis.

Positional Accuracy:Data stored in geographic coordinates using horizontal datum GDA94.

Groundwater Extraction Points: Before 1995, the positional accuracy was poor as a result of inconsistencies with the collection/storage of positional data and original mapping formats. Location accuracy has improved with the the use of GPS.

Attribute Accuracy:Refer to Data Dictionary in this record.
All groundwater point data records are attributed with details according to department standards at the time of capture. Not all attributes from the Bores dataset are stored in this dataset.

The attribute naming format uses 10 characters with no spaces to be suitable for an ESRI shape-file format. An alias attribute name is applied to an ESRI file geo-database format.

Logical Consistency:Not applicable

Completeness:The spatial data is continually updated.

Data Dictionary

AttributeAttribute DescriptionPossible CodeCode Description
01. LIC_NOAlias: Licence Number.
Groundwater or Surface Water Extraction Licence Number.
Note: Several bores may be listed with a single groundwater extraction licence.
02. BORE_NOAlias: Bore Number
Registered number of the bore.
Note: GW extraction licence only.
03. MAXTOT_ENTAlias: Licensed Maximum Total Entitlement
This field describes the Maximum Total Entitlement (megalitres per year) for a groundwater extraction licence.
Eg. Maximum Total Entitlement 200 ML/Y from 3 Bore(s)
The amount specified relates to the licence. There may be several bores that share the entitlement.
04. WCDAlias: Water Control District

An area declared by the Minister to administer the management of the extent and distribution of surface water and groundwater resources.
05. WAPAlias: Water Allocation Planning Area

A declared area that applies to specific water resources within a Water Control District and ensures that water extraction of the resource is undertaken in a sustainable and equitable manner. Plans are declared by the Minister for a specific time frame with a maximum of ten years.
06. GW_SOURCEAlias: Groundwater resource

The groundwater resource name as defined by the department.
07. LIC_DECAlias: Licence Decision
This is a web link to download the documents created in association with the final groundwater extraction licence decision. The documents are stored as a single PDF.
08. BOREREPORTAlias: Bore Report
A web link to the scanned Statement of Bore.
Note: GW extraction licence only.
09. COMPL_DATEDate that the bore was completed.
Note: GW extraction licence only.
10. YIELDAlias: Yield (L/s)
The flow rate of the bore in litres per second (L/s).
Note: GW extraction licence only.
11. DRILLDEPTHAlias: Drilled Depth (m)
Maximum depth drilled in metres. This may be more than depth on completion if backfilling occurred afterwards.
Note: GW extraction licence only.
12. WATERLEVELAlias: Water Level (m)
Standing water level (SWL) after having drilled through the bottom of the water bearing layer or aquifer. The SWL is measured from the ground level and is in metres.
Note: GW extraction licence only.
13. LATITUDELatitude coordinates are a measurement of distance used to describe the horizontal lines of parallel from the equator (0 degrees latitude) to the north (90 degrees latitude) or south pole (-90 degrees latitude).

Latitude coordinate locations for bores are described using decimal degrees with a negative sign. For example -14.56453. Latitude and longitude coordinates are defined using the datum GDA94 (Geocentric Datum of Australia 1994).
14. LONGITUDELongitude coordinates are a measurement a distance between 180 degrees east or 180 degrees west of the prime meridian (0 degrees longitude) from the north pole to the south pole. The prime meridian is aligned through Greenwich, England.

Longitude coordinate locations for bores are described using decimal degrees. For example 132.34567. Latitude and longitude coordinates are defined using the datum GDA94 (Geocentric Datum of Australia 1994).
