Description

Abstract:

This spatial dataset provides polygon information on the land unit boundaries of Andado Station, Northern Territory. 38 land units were identified on the property describing dominant landform, soils and vegetation. The associated technical report also notes information about the pastoral land management implications. The survey area covers 11,008 km2 and is located approximately 500km south-east of Alice Springs via the Stuart Highway and the Finke Road.

The original field survey was undertaken in 2001 at a mapping scale of 1:100,000. Core attributes describing the land units were added to the spatial dataset in December 2013.

Data Quality

Lineage:Map unit boundaries derived using aerial photography and digital satellite imagery, geological and topographic data. Field data (site information) described and classified according to national standards at the time of capture.
Map unit polygons collected via geographic information system (ArcGIS/MapInfo). Core landform, soil and vegetation attributes attached to map units with additional attributes unique to individual surveys.

Positional Accuracy:POLYGON DATA - Map unit boundaries digitised on screen directly from digital rectified aerial photographs. Level of accuracy depends on the number of control points on individual aerial photographs. Control points include creek lines, cadastre and other topographic features. Depending on the nature of the landscape (the number of control points), positional accuracy may vary. Positional accuracy generally considered high to very high.

POINT DATA - Site point coordinates derived from a geographic positioning system with general accuracy of within 10-50m.

Attribute Accuracy:Attributes assigned according to the dominant feature. For example, where ten sites have been grouped to describe a particular map unit and two different soils described from these sites then the dominant soil is chosen. Attribute values, as described in the Data Dictionary below, have been added to each polygon.

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

LAND_UNITAlias: Land Unit
The LAND_UNIT field is the land unit label from the spatial dataset (ie.9a2).
LF_CLASSAlias: Landform Class
Landform class is a system adopted by the department. The categories do not conform to national criteria even though some have been sourced from Australian Soil and Land Survey - Field Handbook (Mc Donald et.al. 1998).
LF_DESCAlias: Landform Description
Landform related text field from the map legend. The amount of detail may vary between surveys.
SOILAlias: Dominant Soil Order
The dominant soil order described in a land unit is recorded.
SOIL_DESCAlias: Soil Description
Soil related text field from the map legend. The amount of detail may vary between surveys.
SOIL_SYSAlias: Soil Classification System
The soil classification system used to describe the soil in the land unit description
SPECIES_ 3Alias: Veg Dom Species 3
Where 3 dominant vegetation species described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance
SPECIES_1Alias: Veg Dom Species 1
The dominant vegetation species described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.
SPECIES_2Alias: Veg Dom Species 2
Where 2 dominant vegetation species were described in a land unit. The order of species listed determines their dominance.
SURVEY_IDAlias: Survey Identifier
A department code that usually refers to the first five characters from the original survey site sheet.
SURVEY_NMEAlias: Survey Name
The full name of the report to which the mapping refers
VEG_DESCAlias: Vegetation Description
The VEG_DESC is the vegetation related text field from the map legend. The amount of detail may vary between surveys.
VEG_STRUCAlias: Dominant Veg Structure
Vegetation structural classes from NVIS (ESCAVI 2003), Walker and Hopkins (1998) and Specht (1970) classification schemes
VEG_SYSAlias: Veg Classification System
The National Vegetation Information System (NVIS) classification system.
