Description

Abstract:

Soil and Land Assessment of the Southern Part of Flying Fox Station for Irrigated Agriculture. Part B: Digital Soil Mapping and Crop Specific Land Suitability Assessment.
Department survey code ROPDSM_100
The field survey was undertaken at a mapping scale of 1:100,000.

This pixel based raster spatial dataset describes findings from a soil and land suitability investigation undertaken during 2016-2019 to assess irrigated agricultural potential on part of Flying Fox Station using digital soil mapping (DSM) methodologies. Land suitability class outcomes are presented for the 17 crop groups assessed.
Digital soil mapping land suitability outcomes were produced in parallel with traditional land unit mapping and a general land capability assessment (see Report A of this report series). Outcomes are indicative of potential for agricultural development and management constraints across the study area. All limitations attached to a pixel are included within the spatial dataset.

CAUTION:
Land suitability maps were created using attribute models at a scale of 1: 100,000.
When assessing specific areas within the mapping it is recommended a site inspection is undertaken to establish unmapped variation and confirm mapping accuracy on the ground.
The mapping does not indicate, imply or ascertain the likelihood of water availability or the granting of appropriate water extraction licensing needed to satisfy the irrigation requirements of the potential agricultural development options needed. Land that would likely be used if surface water catchment was implemented is currently mapped as Class 4 land due to the significant management and financial implications.

Data Quality

Lineage:Agricultural land suitability rasters were created by using pixel-based (30x30 m) digital soil mapping (DSM) methodologies. The process involved identifying potential crops for the Roper River region and determining land suitability limitations and their necessary components needed to model crop specific land suitability outcomes (i.e. slope, flooding, drainage etc.). Cross-validation modelling (in RStudio) was used to analyse relevant data layers (including satellite imagery, digital elevation modelling and radiometrics data) and field data collected during the project to create individual attribute models. Attribute models were then combined in RStudio and classified according to the Irrigated agricultural land suitability framework for the Roper River Region of the Northern Territory to create final land suitability outcome rasters for each crop group.

Crop specific land suitability outcomes are presented as a raster dataset joined to the attribute table (stored in ESRI file geodatabase) with each pixel recording the overall land suitability class, major limitations and all individual limitation categories assessed. Crop group outcomes differ based on individual soil by crop interactions.

Positional Accuracy:Digital soil mapping (DSM) uses pixel-based (30x30 m)

Attribute Accuracy:The attribute information conforms to the 'Australian Soil and Land Survey Field Handbook' at time of capture. Attributes are assigned based on DSM modelled attribute outcomes (on a 30x30 m pixel basis). The department's list of attribute values assigned to each pixel is described in the Data Dictionary below.

Each land unit has been attributed with a suitability class to describe the POTENTIAL FOR IRRIGATED AGRICULTURE from Class 1 suitable land with negligible limitations to Class 5 unsuitable land with extreme limitations. Seventeen crop groups have been assessed for potential agricultural land use within 2 categories, IRRIGATED CROPS (Tree, Row, Root, Grain and fibre, Small seeded, Pulse, Industrial, Hay and Forage and Forestry Crops) and RAIN-FED CROPS (Hay and forage crops).

For detailed information about Land Suitability Classes, review Appendix 3, in the accompanying report. (See Supplementary Information in this metadata record for report PDF download details).
