Description

Abstract:

This metadata record describes a series of soil and land resource maps in the Alice Springs region from surveys conducted between 1976 and 1991. This mapping covers 43 pastoral leases some of which are now Aboriginal Land Trusts.

The mapping and accompanying reports were published to provide information and advice on how pastures could be managed to optimise productivity in the long term.
In most cases, the datasets and accompanying reports aim to refine the original land system mapping published by Perry et.al. (1962) and provides general descriptions of the landscape and vegetation.

All mapping was originally published in hard copy format only and digitised into a GIS polygon spatial format between 2013 and 2018.

In 2020, a project was initiated to create consistent descriptive attributes for the spatial datasets and also update the mapping products. The pastoral properties will be published in groups and listed in the Lineage notes in this metadata record.

The pastoral properties include;
Aileron, Alcoota, Allambi, Amburla, Bond Springs, Bushy Park, Central Mt Wedge, Coniston, Deep Well, Derwent, Dneiper, Erldunda, Hamilton Downs, Huckitta, Jervois, Jinka, Kulgera, Lilla Creek, Lyndavale, Maryvale, Milton Park, Mt Cavenagh, Mt Denison, Mt Ebenezer, Mt Riddock, Napperby, Narwietooma, New MacDonald Downs, Numery, Old MacDonald Downs, Owen Springs, Palmer Valley, Pine Hill, Ringwood, Suplejack, Todd River, Umbeara, Undoolya, Utopia, Waite River, Woodgreen (Atartinga) and Yambah.

Data Quality

Lineage:This project commenced in 1976 and was completed in 1991. Assessment of range condition was based on: data collected at permanently located sites, 1971 b/w aerial photography and pastoral maps from the Department of Lands.

All mapping was originally published in hard copy format only and digitised into a GIS polygon spatial format between 2013 and 2018.

The original hard copy maps were scanned and rectified using ESRI ArcGIS software, Google Earth imagery, 1:100,000 topographic maps (Geoscience Australia) and cadastral boundaries (Department of Lands) as a reference. Root mean square (RMS) error varies from 30m to 500m depending on the accuracy of original map and available reference points. Rectified images resolution varies from approx. 6m to 8m pixel size.
Rectified images have been cleaned in one automated pass, vectorised into lines and converted to polygons. The polygons have been cleaned, checked and attributed manually, using the original raster maps. Attribute detail varies depending on the original map. Boundary polygons have been created by merging the land system polygons and may not follow cadastral boundaries.

UPDATE PROJECT
Spatial data descriptions of 33 stations have been updated using consistent attributes and 31 (2 combined) new map products are now avaviable. The pastoral properties were published in batches as follows;
- Group 1 updates 17/12/2020: Deep Well, Ringwood, Todd River.
- Group 2 updates 17/12/2020: Aileron, Bushy Park, Hamilton Downs, Milton Park, Yamba. (Milton Park was previously subdivided. The map product is included as part of Hamilton Downs)
- Group 3 updates 14/12/2021: Coniston, Derwent, Huckitta, Mount Denison, Mount Riddock, New MacDonald Downs.
- Group 4 updates 30/05/2022: Alcoota, Allambi, Bond Springs, Central Mount Wedge, Dneiper, Jervois, Jinka, Mt Cavenagh, Mt Ebenezer, Napperby, Numery, Old MacDonald Downs, Owen Springs, Palmer Valley, Suplejack, Tanami Downs, Undoolya, Utopia, Waite River.

Positional Accuracy:Positional accuracy at a nominal scale of 1:200 000 - 1:250 000 is considered reasonable.
Unlike other land resource surveys in the Northern Territory, the original mapping scale is unknown. Field site data (if collected) has also not been located.
The level of detail presented in each spatial dataset also varies between surveys. In a small number of instances, the mapping is considered equivalent to 1:100 000 land unit mapping, however most datasets are broader, published at a nominal scale of between 1:200 000 and 1:250 000.

Attribute Accuracy:Attributes on the polygons (labels and descriptions) are taken directly from the original map and reflect the data standards at the time the map was created. If polygons on the original map are not attributed, they are labelled UNKNOWN. The attribute naming format uses 10 characters with no spaces to be suitable for an ESRI shape-file format. An alias attribute name is applied to an ESRI file geo-database format.

UPDATE PROJECT
A standard list of descriptive attributes were assigned to the polygons. Refer to the data dictionary below.

Logical Consistency:Polygon features conform to the following topological rules: Polygons are single part. There are no duplicate polygons. Polygons do not self overlap nor do they overlap other polygons. There are no gaps. The tests of logical consistency were performed by the Geospatial Services Branch staff using ESRI ArcGIS software and FME software to maintain clean topology.

Completeness:The 43 pastoral lease hard copy maps are available in a GIS polygon spatial format with limited attributes.The reports are not available from this department.
The Technical Reports are not generally available. Access requests should be directed to Arid Zone Research Institute Library in Alice Springs. Contact: azri.library@nt.gov.au
