Description

Abstract:

This spatial data set is a compilation of 10 existing land resource surveys that were reinterpreted to identify land suitable for annual and perennial horticultural potential and soil drainage classes. This compilation data set is relevant at a scale of 1:50,000. The study area in the Greater Darwin region covers more than 9,700 km2.

Information about the existing surveys is available in the associated metadata and technical reports. See list of surveys under Supplementary Information below.

This project was initiated by staff from Dept Lands Planning Environment and Dept Land Resource Management. Additionally, staff from Dept Primary Industry and Fisheries supplied a set of conditions to identify the extent of soil-landscapes generally suitable for annual and perennial horticulture. (see Data Dictionary below)

The land suitability mapping does not take into account the availability of groundwater. Groundwater information needs to be intersected with the land suitability mapping for a realistic assessment, unless surface water supplies can be utilised.

Data Quality

Lineage:The base mapping used for the interpretation was land unit mapping at a 25,000 scale but included a survey at 50,000 scale. The information should therefore be used at a scale of 1:50,000. However, this type of information was not available across the entire Coomalie Local Government Area so more generalised land type map was generally used. It was supported by a number of individual land unit datasets covering parts of the region, soil profile site information and 1:10,000 topographic datasets to aid an estimation of slope.

The 10 spatial datasets within the study area were merged and each polygon was assigned a horticulture potential and a drainage class.

Positional Accuracy:Polygon Data - Map unit boundaries digitised on screen directly from digital rectified aerial photographs. Level of accuracy depends on the number of control points on individual aerial photographs. Control points include creek lines, cadastre and other topographic features. Depending on the nature of the landscape (the number of control points), positional accuracy may vary. Positional accuracy generally considered high to very high.

Point Data - Site point coordinates derived from a geographic positioning system with general accuracy of within 10-50m.

Attribute Accuracy:Attributes assigned according to the dominant feature. For example, where ten sites have been grouped to describe a particular map unit and two different soils described from these sites then the dominant soil is chosen. Attribute values, as described in the Data Dictionary below, have been added to each polygon.

Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.

Completeness:Three areas within the study area currently do not have appropriate land resource information to undertake an assessment. Broad scale information over these areas indicates that the large area to the south east of the township of Adelaide River is similar to the landscapes mapped on Marrakai, Mount Ringwood and Mount Bundey and therefore generally considered to have a low suitability for horticulture. The large area in the Finniss River area is considered similar to the mapped landscapes immediately to the north and north-west and largely considered unsuitable for horticulture. Topographic information across the small area to the south-west of the Adelaide River township indicates that the landscape is rugged and also considered to have low suitability for horticulture.

Perennial horticulture generally requires deeper soil then annual horticulture to be considered suitable, thus the deeper soil requirement.
