Description
This polygon spatial dataset describes land use in the Northern Territory from 2016 - 2022.
The Northern Territory Land use mapping for improved biosecurity outcomes product represents contemporary land use for 2016 - 2022, mapped to a national classification scheme developed by the Australian Collaborative Land Use and Management Program (ACLUMP). Land use across the Northern Territory has been classified using the latest version of the Australian Land Use and Management Classification Version 8. The Australian Land Use and Management Program aims to provide nationally consistent spatial information to assist in planning, natural resource condition monitoring and investment, agricultural productivity and sustainability, biodiversity conservation, natural disaster management and biosecurity.
There are 191 Tertiary Land Use Classes that are grouped into 6 Primary Classes and subdivided into 32 Secondary Classes. Each land use class is defined with a text description as well as a numeric code between 100 and 699. The six primary classes of land use are distinguished in order of increasing levels of intervention. The ALUM classification version 8 also includes fields to describe agricultural commodities - for consistent recording of detailed information about perceived intervention to the landscape, including crops, livestock and management at the time of mapping.

Data Quality
Lineage:The Digital Cadastral Database of the Northern Territory obtained from Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics (DIPL) 02/11/2022 in ESRI polygon shape file format. The proposed cadastre boundary layer for remote communities across the Northern Territory obtained 02/11/2022 in ESRI polygon shape file format was incorporated into the digital cadastre layer. The combined cadastral database and proposed boundary layer were then subset into broad regions for delineation and attribution of land use at the required scale level.
Dependent on the required minimum mapping scale, land use boundaries were further delineated within the combined cadastre dataset. Land use boundaries were delineated from a variety of imagery including digital aerial photography, Sentinel-2, Esri World Imagery and Landsat-8 satellite imagery. To delineate features in the water class the Surface Hydrology Polygons (National) spatial layer was incorporated into the land use mapping along with wetland mapping derived from Landsat-8 satellite imagery.
A variety of datasets were used to attribute each of the land use boundaries, including visual assessment of imagery, ancillary spatial and non-spatial information and data collected in the field. For each land use polygon, the main source of information used to assign each land use code is recorded in the attribute table and includes the scale and currency of the information used to make the decision. Each for the broad regions were then combined to produce a single land use spatial dataset for the Northern Territory.
Version 1 - 2016 was published in September 2017. This dataset has been archived and is available upon request.
Version 2 - Major edits to this dataset in late 2019 were focussed in the Darwin-Litchfield and Katherine areas.
Version 3 - Major edits to this dataset in late 2022 were focussed in the Darwin-Litchfield, Katherine areas and Douglas-Daly region.
Positional Accuracy:Land use boundaries were produced from a variety of sources. The Northern Territory Digital Cadastral Database formed the base layer for the land use mapping product. Positional accuracy for the cadastre layer varies; Urban - +/- 3 to 4 m Rural - +/- 3 to 4 m Pastoral - +/- 1000 m Land use boundaries were delineated in ESRI ArcGIS software using a variety of imagery (aerial photography and satellite) captured at different spatial scales. Positional accuracy for the aerial photography varies based on the spatial resolution; 45cm; horizontal +/- 0.9 m 30cm; horizontal accuracy +/- 0.3m 15cm; horizontal accuracy +/- 0.3m Position accuracy for Sentinel-2 imagery is reported to be < 12m and for Landsat-8 satellite imagery is reported as < 30m.
Attribute Accuracy:Accuracy assessment of the land use mapping product was undertaken using both field validation sites and visual assessment of high-resolution imagery and/or ancillary data. For further details on the validation methodology and assessment are available in the supplementary information. At the tertiary level the overall mapping accuracy was 85%, increasing in accuracy to 90% and 95% at the secondary and primary level. Attributes have been assigned to each polygon and are described in the Data Dictionary below. The minimum attributes from 1 to 10 are national requirements. The additional attributes from 11 - 15 have been added by this department to support analysis and data display.
Logical Consistency:GIS editing tools were used to rectify all overshoots and undershoots in line work. Polygon topology rules applied are; must not overlap, must not have gaps and each polygon has only one label.
Completeness:Complete - data records may continue to be amended.
