Description

Abstract:

This dataset comprises samarium-neodymium (Sm-Nd) isotopic ratios and model age determinations of whole rock and mineral samples from the Northern Territory. The data are sourced from the Northern Territory Geological Survey (NTGS) and collaborating researchers and laboratories. This dataset comprises sample metadata, analytical data and bibliographic references, isotopic ratios are measured using multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-)methods. Initial epsilon Nd values for igneous rocks are corrected to the magmatic crystallisation age of the sample where known.

In instances where absolute ages are not constrained but relative age relationships provide a constraint and inferred age is used. Corrections are only applied to sedimentary rocks where the sample has a unimodal age or the sequence contains a dated volcanic unit. The dataset is updated on an annual basis.

Data Quality

Lineage:This dataset is derived from published NTGS studies and data acquired during NTGS projects currently in progress. The data sources are recorded within the dataset.
NTGS AND LEGACY DATA: Published data is continually updated.

Positional Accuracy:Nominal Scale: 1:100 000
The positional accuracy is variable but usually not better than 100m

Attribute Accuracy:The isotopic data comes from samples analysed by geochronologists from NTGS, Geoscience Australia, researchers or analytical laboratories operating in collaboration with NTGS. Data in the dataset has been checked against the original source.

Logical Consistency:A geoscientist visually inspected the finished dataset to make sure the attributes were accurate and the data were consistent spatially with the quality-controlled database it was derived from. Tests are also carried out on these data for data completeness, correct spatial representation, attribute accuracy, logical consistency and correctness.

Completeness:The dataset coverage is complete for the Northern Territory and bordering regions up to 1 degree 30 minutes distal east and west and up to 1 degree distal to the south.
