| History/Origin | Captain Haultain of the Patrol Vessel "Larrakeyah" in the 1930s named the feature "Abbott Is", presumably after the Northern Territory Administrator CLA Abbott. In June 1938, Abbott signed a letter approving names given by Haultain to features on Chart BA1044 - this included the preference for Abbott I in lieu of Sandy I. Abbott Is was originally named by PP King in July 1819 as "Rocky Island". However, it was not until BA 1044 (of 1945) that a name appeared on an offical chart, and then as "Sandy Island". The local Aboriginal name for the feature is Dalmana. |
