| History/Origin | The name Amburla (or variants) has been used in official documents and maps since 1940 when Anburla and in 1941 Field Officer Clough indicated a bank had been built across The Arnburla when reporting on improvements to the Grazing Licence (GL 668). In the 1940s, following the return of the Davis brothers from the War a partnership was formed to run the greater Hamilton Downs Station which also included adjacent stations - Milton Park and Amburla. The 1959, the 4 Mile to an Inch series Hermannsburg sheet, Provisional Edition was the first official map to show the names - Anburla (Homestead) and Anburla Creek. The 1961, 1:250,000 R502 Series Hermannsburg sheet, Edition 1 and the 1979 Edition 2 continued the names - Anburla (Homestead) and Anburla Creek. The 1965 Northern Territory Pastoral Map shows the pastoral lease Amburla (PL 669) following the subdivision of Hamilton Downs Station in 1964 with the homestead spelt Amboola. The 1:100,000 and 1:50,000 map sheets Anburla covering the homestead and creek, were named prior to 1982, after the then spelling of the creek. In 1986, during the nomenclature check of the 1:50,000 sheet Anburla and in 1988, during the checking of the 1:250,000 sheet Hermannsburg (National Topographic Series) Edition 1, it was recommended the homestead and creek names be changed to Amburla, the accepted spelling of the name confirmed with the station owners. The 1:50,000 Anburla sheet was printed using the form Anburla (Amburla) for the homestead, creek and dam whilst the 1:250,000 Hermannsburg sheet kept the form Anburla. The 2000 nomenclature check for the 1:250,000 sheet Hermannsburg (National Topographic Series) Edition 2, again recommended the homestead and creek names be changed to Amburla. These changes have subsequently been carried out on the new sheet, published in October 2000. The NT and National Gazetteers have been updated with the names of the features being Amburla and Anburla being an alternate name. |
