History/Origin Named by PP King on 21 May 1818, in compliment to the third Earl of Bathurst (1762 - 1834), Secretary of State for Colonies. The second Earl was given the title Baron Apsley in 1771, hence the adjacent Apsley Strait.

The Dutch named the Island - De Speult Eylandt on 5 May 1623 by Van Closter in the "Arnhem" in honour of Herman van Speult, Governor of Ambon.
