| History/Origin | Camfield Station is believed to be named after the Camfield River which AC Gregory showed (without a name) on his plans that accompanied his report to the Royal Geographical Society, London in 1857. Another plan of Gregory's route signed by Gregory in 1857 (held by Keiran Kelly), shows the named river - Camfield River. LANDS Plan CP880 shows Camfield River with a note "O'Donnell - NTR/103" which may indicate that O'Donnell named the Camfield River in 1883. As LANDS do not have a copy of plan NTR/103, nor a copy of the signed 1857 plan, the Dept is unable to verify the origin of the name. WA Surveyor General's Office has indicated that a Henry Camfield (1799-1845) farmer, Postmaster (Perth) and Government Resident (Albany) may have been known to Gregory who carried out a number of surveys in the Albany area of WA. Goyder's Pastoral Compilation of 1885 shows Camfield River. The origin of the name Camfield River although not documented can most probably be accredited to AC Gregory after Henry Camfield. |
