History/Origin Mount Daly and Daly Range were named by John McDouall Stuart on 18 July 1862, during Stuart's third (in the Territory) and successful final attempt to cross the Continent from south to north. Both features are named after Sir Dominick Daly who was the Governor of South Australia at the time.

Stuart viewed the Mount and Range from a distance to the south east and records in his journal ".. the range on opposite side of the river (sic Adelaide River), for which I was directing my course, being the highest I have seen in this new country, I have honoured it by naming it after His Excellency the Governor-in-Chief of South Australia, Daly Range, and its highest peak to the north, Mount Daly."
