History/Origin | Named by John McDouall Stuart on 29 May 1860. Stuart in his published report (South Australian Parliamentary Paper No 65 of 1861) wrote "After crossing a number of rough sandhills, we arrived at the top of a range, which I have named Davenport Range, after the Hon Samuel Davenport, MLC." Sir Samuel Davenport (1818-1906), between 1846 and 1866 was a member of the South Australian Legislative Council. He held the office of Commissioner of Public Works in 1857 and President of the Royal Geographical Society (SA) from its inception for a number of years. Bessie Threadgill in "South Australian Land Exploration 1856 to 1880 Part 1" published 1922 on page 52-53 (footnote 33) records that "The nomenclature of Stuart's original journal differs...considerably from that of printed versions of the expedition...Younghusband Ra. (changed to Davenport)...". |
