| History/Origin | The name was first applied in the area in the 1940s to a wartime airstrip constructed on the Peninsula. The airstrip was named after P/O William Julius H. Gove (401636) 2nd Sqd R.A.A.F. Born: 22 April, 1921 at Toorak, Melbourne, a university who died as a result of a crash on 20 April, 1943 near Milingimbi. Gove was with a Bomber Squadron based at Hughes Airfield, south of Darwin and using Milingimbi as an advance base. Gove was killed two days before his 22nd birthday and never knew of his promotion to a commission of Flight Sergeant. He never saw his son, who was born after his death. His father, Robert V. Gove was a Captain in the Australian Flying Corp in World War One and joined World War Two as a Wing Commander. Pilot Officer Gove had been buried on Rabuma Island, near Milingimbi, in 1943, but is commemorated in a plaque at the Adelaide River War Cemetery. |
