History/Origin Hugh Creek was named by John McDouall Stuart on 7 April 1860 after Hugh Chambers, Stuart's main financial backer, during his fourth journey in attempting to cross the Australian continent from south to north.

The Hugh Creek was later changed to Hugh River.
