History/Origin | Nitmiluk is the Jawoyn name for Katherine Gorge. The name means 'cicada place'. The name was given by the Dreamtime figure, Nabilil, as he travelled through the country and when he came to the entrance to the Gorge where he heard the song of the cicada insect - 'Nit, nit, nit, nit!' (Adapted from the Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) National Park Plan of Management 1993.) |
