| History/Origin | Named in the late 1930s by Rev Webb and Shepherdson after their wives Eve Webb and I G (Ella) Shepherdson (ie EVELLA). Ella Shepherdson wrote in her book Half a Century in Arnhem Land (1981) - "The lake was first sited by my husband in 1935 as he flew over it in the Miles Hawk on his way to Yirrkala. Later he and Rev TT Webb travelled from Milingimbi up the Buckingham River by the Mission boat "Larrpan" and, guided by several natives who new the area, found the lovely fresh water lake, which is three quarters of a mile long by half a mile wide. It was named after Mr Webb's wife Eve and myself (Ella). It was not until 1969 that the Mission was started along side the lake by Mr and Mrs Geoff Davey." Shepherdson later writes "Lake Evella (Gapuwiyag)". The current spelling for the Aboriginal community name is Gapuwiyak. |
