History/Origin The name 'MINDIL SWAMP' was first used on a survey plan by R E Gardiner in October 1871 - designating the area now reclaimed as Kahlin Oval as "Mindil Swamp". This name was later applied to what is now Mindil Beach on the other side of Myilly Point.

Whilst there have been suggestions attributing the origin of the name to the Austrian botanist, G Mendel,or that it is of Macassan origin, it is believed to be a corruption of the Larrakia word meaning "sweet nut grass", pronounced 'MIN-DEEL'.
