| History/Origin | The Mitchell Ranges were named after the Honourable Samuel James Mitchell, Acting Administrator of the Northern Territory (1910 to 1912) and first Resident Judge (1911 to 1912). Diary of the Caledon Bay Prospecting Party - Journal Entry - "On Friday 4th August 1911 - Note. - For all the purposes of this expedition and for all future references to same, we have this day decided to call the range through which we have just passed The Mitchell Ranges, out of compliment to his Honour Mr. Justice Mitchell, the present Acting Administrator of the Northern Territory, to whom we are indebted for the opportunities afforded by the Government of prospecting and exploring these parts. We hope that this name will be generally adopted". Murphy, W. F & McCaw, W. J & Australia. Department of External Affairs. (1912).
