History/Origin Named by Matthew Flinders on 11 February 1803, after Right Hon. Robert Saunders Dundas, Viscount Melville, who later became the First Lord of the Admiralty (1812) after Flinders had returned to England.

Flinders also named other features in and around Nhulunbuy after Viscount Melville - Mount Saunders, Dundas Point, Melville Isle (which was rename Bremer Island in 1934), Melville Bay (which now includes Gove Harbour).
