History/Origin | Mount Strzelecki was named by John McD Stuart on 23 May 1860 during his fourth expedition to cross the Australian continent from south to north, after Count Strezelecki. The Mount is shown on the map attached to Stuarts report as Mt Strzelecki, but the name is spelt Strelitzki in SAPP 65 of 1861 and in the manuscript of Stuarts Journal (Vol 2) but was corrected in Hardman (Pg 187). Mount Strzelecki is the highest point of the Crawford Range. Heney, HME in Paul Edmond de Strezelecki was born at Gluszyna (pronounced Gwe-sheen-na) in the west of Poland on 20 July 1797. He was intelligent, ambitious and restless. He arrived in Australia in 1838 and was the first non Aboriginal person to ascend Mount Kosciusko which he named .... As a reminder for future generations upon this continent of a name clear and hallow to every Pole, to every human, to every friend of freedom and honour .... Kosciuszko. |
