History/Origin | Flinders named the Port after Governor George Mcarthur. This in turn was named Leichhardt in 1845 after members of the McArthur family of Camden, New South Wales. Ludwig Leichhardt in his Journal wrote: "Sept. 21 (1845) -...I called this river the "Macarthur," in acknowledgement of the liberal support my expedition received from Messrs. James and William Macarthur of Cambden...". |
