Lt Gen Robertson was born at Warrnambool, Victoria, on 29 October 1894. He entered the Royal Military College, Duntroon in 1912 and commissioned at the outbreak of WWI when he saw active service at Gallipoli, Palestine and Egypt. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for his leadership during the 10th Light Horse attack on Magdhaba and was twice mentioned in despatches.

Between the Wars, Robertson served chiefly in instructional postings, including a posting as the Chief Instructor, Small Arms School, Randwick, and as the Director of Military Art at the Royal Military College. From 1946 until 1951 Lt Gen Robertson was the Commander In Chief of the British Commonwealth occupation forces in Japan.
