| History/Origin | Sandy I. first appears on chart BA1044 (of 1945) . Captain Haultain of the Patrol Vessel "Larrakeyah" in the 1930s named the feature "Abbott Island", presumably after the Northern Territory Administrator CLA Abbott. In June 1938, Abbott signed a letter approving names given by Haultain to features on Chart BA1044 - this included the preference for Abbott I in lieu of Sandy I. The feature was originally named "Rocky Island" by PP King in July 1819. |
