History/Origin Named by Stokes on 8 September 1839.

Stokes in his Discoveries in Australia writes following the description and naming of Hope Inlet:
Setember 8 (1839)- ....From the south point of Clarence Strait it is distant eleven miles, and the bay in which it lies, from the shallow water at the head of it, was called Shoal Bay."
