| History/Origin | Col PE Warburton in his journal of exploration (South Australian Parliamentary Paper (SAPP) 28 of 1875) makes mention on 7 May 1873 that Central Mount Wedge was a very remarkable hill in the Mount Wedge Range. A month later WC Gosse (on 5 June 1873) came across Warburton's camp at Central Mount Wedge. Gosse make no mention of the bluff or range, by name, in his journal (SAPP 48 of 1874) but shows a "Bluff" and "Stuart's Bluff Range" on his 1863 plan of exploration. It is believed that as Gosse's plan of exploration was published first, and Warburton did not name the range on his plan, Stuart Bluff Range has become the feature name. It is believed to be named after explorer John McDouall Stuart, however a check of maps would indicate he did not venture westward enough to intersect this range. |
