History/Origin This central Litchfield Shire locality derives its name from the name used by Len Cant in the 1970s for his Store and Caravan park on the Stuart Highway at the 19 Mile.

Coolaninga is possiby of Aboriginal orgin, but some say it came about due to "it being a cool place to linger" - being close to 29km from Darwin city.

Since the establishment of the Coolalinga Store, the area has become an important commercial centre for the Litchfield Shire.
