History/Origin | This locality derives its name from the war-time airstrip which was named after John D Livingstone, Jnr, who was born in 1915 in Clarksburg, West Virginia, USA. On 4 April 1942, Lieutenant Livingstone was apparently wounded during action over Darwin, but managed to fly to the newly completed 34 Mile airstrip where he crash landed, dying in the resultant inferno. He was buried at The Gardens Cemetery the following day. The 34 Mile strip was later named Livingstone in his honour. |
