History/Origin The suburb of Muirhead is named in commemoration of James Henry Muirhead, AC (1925-1999), Royal Commissioner into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, barrister, Supreme Court Judge and Administrator.

In 1989 he was appointed a Knight of the Order of St John and, on Australia Day 1991, he was awarded Australia's highest civil honour when he was appointed as a Companion of the Order of Australia for public service and service to law.

He is especially known for his work as the Commissioner into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody in the early 1990s.

Prior to gazettal on 7 July 2004 (NTG 27) the area comprising Muirhead was part of the suburb of Lee Point.
