History/Origin Haydon Street is named in commemoration of Lt Col Laurence John (Jack) Haydon MBE (1918 - 1999) who was born in Launceston Tasmania and joined the Army in 1935. During WWII he served with the AIF in Launceston and Darwin where he was stationed during the 1942 bombing, rising to the commissioned rank of Lieutenant in 1940. After the war Haydon returned to Darwin in 1963 from Launceston to establish and manage an insurance firm and from 1968 until 1970 was the inaugural Chairman of the Insurance Council of South Australia (NT Division). After Cyclone Tracy he served on the Darwin Reconstruction Committee from August to December 1975. He later managed his own consulting firm and formed the Insurance Council of Australia's Darwin Office in which he served from 1975 to 1992. During his time in Darwin, Haydon maintained an active interest in the Citizens Military Forces (CMF).
