History/Origin Named in commemoration of Frank Neale (aviator) who was born in England and served with the Royal Flying Corp and the RAF during World War 1. After the war he went barnstorming around England before being persuaded to move to Australia in the mid 1920s.

Frank Neale was a pilot with Australian Aerial Services and pioneered the Camooweal to Daly Waters scheduled route in February 1930, after which he returned south and joined Donald Mackay and his Aerial Survey Expedition. The Donald Mackay Aerial Survey Expedition covered an area of 67,000 sq miles, flying over 10,000 hours over central and central-western Australia from 12 bases between 1930 and 1937.

According to Edward Wixted in The North-west Aerial Frontier:1919-1934 published by Boolarong Publications, Qld, 1985, "Frank Neale ranks as one of the great aerial achievers of Australian history. In his own time his reputation was substantial and he rubbed shoulders on equal terms with men like Kingsford Smith and Bert Hinkler."

Frank Neale served with the RAAF during World War 2 and was Commanding Officer at Essendon and awarded the Air Force Cross, and died in Victoria in December 1979, aged 84.
