History/Origin The locality Vernon Islands derives its name from the island group which in turn were named by Capt Phillip P King in May 1818.

King did not indicate after whom he named the islands, however following correspondence with England, it has been ascertained that King most probably named the Islands after the Archbishop of York, Edward Vernon, who was consecrated in 1807.
