History/Origin The Victoria River locality derives its name from the stream of the same name, named by Captains Wickham and Stokes on 4 December 1839 during their survey of the north and west coasts of Australia in 'HMS Beagle' after Queen Victoria who had come to the English throne in 1837.

The ?Beagle? explored the Victoria River to near where the Victoria Highway crosses the River.
