History/Origin Named after William Alderson (known as Yorky Billy) (1897 - 1979) an Aboriginal buffalo shooter and crocodile hunter whose father was an Englishman, William Alderson (known as Yorky Mick), from Yorkshire, and whose mother was a Ambugaria woman from around Nourlangie, who died when Yorky Billy was three years old. Yorky Billy accompanied his father as a fettler on the railways and droving in the VRD. They later returned to the Kakadu area and lived by prospecting, crocodile shooting and working for buffalo hunters.

Yorky Billy subsequently married Minnie, an Aboriginal woman from the Maningrida area. The couple had six children, Mick, Jessie, Violet, Elizabeth, Kenneth and Nellie. Mike was Chairman of the Kakadu Board of Management prior to his death.
