History/Origin After HMAS Tarakan, a LCH (Landing Craft Heavy) of 323 tonnes, commissioned on 15 June 1973, having been built in Maryborough, Queensland.

HMAS Tarakan and HMAS Brunei sailed from Brisbane on 26 December 1974 as part of the RAN's operation NAVY HELP DARWIN following Cyclone Tracy's devastation of Darwin in December 1974, arriving in Port Darwin on 13 January 1975.

On 17 January HMAS Brunei, Tarakan, Wewak and Stuart, which was towing the severely damaged Attack, left Darwin for Cairns.

HMAS Tarakan was decommissioned in 1985, after 12 years service, and recommissioned in 1988 for various duties out of Cairns, including naval reserve training.
