History/Origin Andrew Lennox was born in 1874 in Victoria. In 1897 he was on a Christian mission on the Forrest River. He left following a blow to the head from an indigenous man. In 1899 Andrew and a fellow Forrest River missionary decided to start their own mission somewhere in the Northern Territory.

Andrew rode a horse from the Oodnadatta railhead to Kapalga billabong, close to the South Alligator River in what is now Kakadu National Park. The journey took twenty-two weeks.

The Northern Territory Native Industrial Mission ran at Kapalga billabong and on Greenhill Island until mid-1903. The missionaries provided for up to 80 Aboriginal people, who were taught to grow crops and raise stock.

In 1900, Andrew rode a bicycle from Darwin to Adelaide, the fifth person to make the trip. He spoke at public meetings, raising enough funds to buy a boat for the mission. On both his overland trips, Andrew followed the overland telegraph line.

In between teaching the word of God he survived skirmishes with luggers, crocodiles, snakes and mining companies and sailed luggers through difficult seas to Darwin.

Andrew lived in Darwin with his wife and child until 1906 while he looked for ways to start another mission. He then returned to New Zealand where he worked as a home missionary. He lived in Dunedin until his death in 1962, but died on a visit to his son in Adelaide.
