History/Origin Named in commemoration of Major Maurice John Moore who spent many years in the Northern Territory and was active in both Government and Military circles.

He was an Army Reserve Officer from 1953 to 1979. During his service he was awarded the Australian Efficiency Decoration and First Clasp Efficiency Decoration. He also had a long career in the Government.

Major Moore was a founding member of the Royal Australian Artillery Association (NT) Inc and at his death was its President. Major Moore along with Lt Col Haydon was instrumental in guiding the development of the Darwin Military Museum.

He died in Darwin in 1985, aged 52.
