History/Origin Father John Peter Leary MSC was an Australian Catholic missionary priest who served for more than five decades in the Northern Territory. He is recognised for his long term pastoral service among Aboriginal communities across several regions of the Territory, including Melville Island, Daly River (Nauiyu), Port Keats (Wadeye), Bathurst Island and Darwin. In recognition of his service, the Father Leary Bridge near Daly River and Leary Street in Bellamack are named in his honour.

John Peter Leary was ordained as a priest of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) and arrived in the Northern Territory in January 1953. His first appointment was at Garden Point Mission on Melville Island, where he served in pastoral care, education and ministry among Aboriginal and mixed heritage children and families.

In March 1955, Leary commenced work at the Catholic mission established on the Daly River following a request by local residents for a school, health clinic and church to serve Aboriginal stockmen and their families in the surrounding pastoral region. In this role, he worked with community members and church authorities to establish mission facilities that provided education and basic health services, and to build pastoral relationships with the wider community.

During his time at Daly River, members of the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart were appointed to the mission's school and health centre, while the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart supervised pastoral care for boys. The mission church, dedicated to St Francis Xavier, was completed and opened in 1961.

Father Leary's ministry extended beyond Daly River. In 1958 he was appointed Priest in Charge at Port Keats (Wadeye), where he engaged in community pastoral work and sought to understand and respond to local cultural contexts. His engagement there included collaboration with anthropological researchers and local leaders in efforts to strengthen community identity and wellbeing.

In the mid 1960s, Leary returned briefly to Garden Point before serving as Superior of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart community in the Northern Territory. From the late 1960s through the 1970s and early 1980s, he served in various pastoral positions, including returning to mission centres and supporting leadership development programs aimed at fostering local community agency.

In 1990, he was appointed Vicar for the Aboriginal Apostolate by the Bishop of Darwin, a role focused on the pastoral care of Aboriginal Catholics across the diocese. Leary continued in this ministry into the early 2000s.

For his decades of service to Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory, Father Leary was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2000, with the citation recognising his contributions to their spiritual, educational and health needs.

Father John Peter Leary died on 19 January 2009 and was buried in Wadeye. His life and ministry are documented in church records and historical reports relating to Catholic missions in northern Australia.
