History/Origin Nuku Road after Prision Officer Pauliasi (Paul) Nuku. Paul commenced at Fannie Bay Gaol on 15 January 1979. He had worked at Long Bay Gaol and Parramatta Gaol prior to his commencement at Fannie Bay Gaol. In
September 1979, Paul along with all the Fannie Bay Gaol staff transferred to the new Berrimah Prison. 1986-1989, Paul worked as the first Superintendent in charge of the Wildman River Wilderness Work Camp, a low security bush camp for males aged 14-18. The camp, intended as an alternative to prison, saw the staff and detainees living in tents. Paul and detainees went on to build the camp into a permanent structure which was a significant achievement. Paul believed in providing a structured day to keep the detainees busy and out of trouble. He set up a program where the camp detainees worked with the Parks and Wildlife Rangers. Paul, a professional boxer in his younger days, also drew on his
experience to provide the detainees with a disciplined regime of rigorous exercise and challenging workouts. He ran the boxing club at Berrimah Prison and promoted physical fitness amongst his colleagues, even conducted training sessions after hours. Paul was awarded medals for both 15 years' and 30 years' service to NT Correctional Services and was the longest serving Prison Officer in the Northern Territory at the time of his passing. Paul passed away 24 January 2014 after collapsing on duty at the Datjala Work Camp Nhulunbuy.
