History/Origin Miecheline "Line" or "Big Mum" Walter (nee Vervoort) moved to Katherine with her husband and young family in 1957. An active member of the community, Line became involved with fundraising for the town's first pre-school and volunteered during the establishment of the Public Library on Katherine Terrace. In 1961, Line and her family moved to Darwin where she began her involvement with Nightcliff Pre-school. She was President of the Supporting Mothers of the Nightcliff Pre-school and delegate to the Northern Territory Pre-school Association, of which she was also President for six years. In this role she attended the Pre-school at the Snake Bay Settlement on Melville Island and the opening of Alice Springs South Pre-school. Through her children she was also involved with many activities such as sports, Boy Scouts and Cubs, Girl Guides and Brownies and Primary School Fetes.

Line was a foundation member of the Northern Territory Branch of the Penguin Club of Australia established in 1963. The early members went on to train others and opened six groups throughout the Northern Territory, including the only Penguin group of the Air run through the Outback School of the Air for women on cattle stations. The Club supports women to develop communication skills and confidence in public speaking and the running of efficient meetings and workshops. Line was made a Life Member in 1977. She gave 32 years of service to the Club, including six years as Executive Officer.

She was also a volunteer Treasurer for the Anti-Cancer Council for three years and a member of a number of other groups, including the National Council of Women, U3A Darwin (promoting the motto that "learning is fun"), Bridge and Book Clubs, a chamber orchestra group and the International Club.
