| History/Origin | Charlie Bosshart was born on 6 April 1919 in Mount Perry Queensland. Of German and Swiss heritage, his Queensland born father Fritz Hermann Boshard had changed his name to John (Jack) Bosshart (1879-1952) long before marrying fellow Queenslander Matilda (Tilly) Bertha Ada Neubauer (1893-1949) on New Year's Eve in 1914. Charlie was the second of three sons to John and Tilly, and the eldest to survive childhood. Growing up in rural Queensland, Charlie and his brother Eric worked on the land as labourers. In January 1941, Charlie enlisted in the Army. Private Bosshart served during World War II in the Middle East, New Guinea and New Britain before being discharged from the Army in December 1945. After the war, he returned to labouring and in the 1950s worked in Queensland, including a stint as a station hand at Appleton cattle. By the early 1960s, Charlie had relocated to the Northern Territory and was living in Fannie Bay. He landed work as a gardener at the old Berrimah Farm, where in 1975 he planted the stand of trees near the Berrimah Agricultural Laboratory that became fondly known as 'Charlies Jungle'. By 1977 Charlie had moved to Howard Springs in Darwin's rural area, and had taken up a new occupation as a fisherman. Charlie died in Darwin on 16 December 2011, aged 92. |
