| History/Origin | Named after Flora McLaren, the daughter of Hugh and Mary-Ellen McDonald, born in Victoria on 13 April 1918. Educated at Foster High School she later took up the profession of a hairdresser. Apart from her business, Flora devoted much of her time and energy to local charities and community affairs. On 17 January 1953 Flora married William James McLaren and raised two sons John and Craig. The McLaren moved to Darwin in May 1967 on the appointment of her husband as Commissioner of Police of the NT. Flora again became heavily involved in community organisation. Flora's adult life was centered around assisting and caring for the less fortunate without regard to their status, colour or religion which she continued to do until shortly before her death on 14 July 1996. |
