| History/Origin | Named after Amy Johnson (1903-41), an aviatrix born in Hull, Yorkshire. She became the first women to fly solo from London to Australia, landing in Darwin, amidst great excitement on 24 May 1930. The aeroplane, a tiny single engined Gypsy Moth bi-plane, was later crash-landed in Brisbane. The Gypsy Moth was repaired and flown to Sydney and other southern capitals by various Australian aviators. Amy Johnson, never flew solo again in Australia and accompanied the Gypsy Moth in ANA commercial aircraft, returning to England in August 1930. One of the ANA pilots was James Mollison, whom she married in 1931. Following their marriage they pursued flying careers seperately and together. She later joined the British Air Transport Auxiliary in 1939, and worked as a ferry pilot during WWII. She is belived to have drowned when the transport plane she was flying disappeared over the Thames estuary near London in 1941. |
